April Favourites

If I’m honest, I think this is fast becoming my favourite post to write – obviously I love everything I plan and write for the blog, but it’s nice to look back over the month and remember the little things. Plus these round up posts are some of my favourites to read over on other blogs – probably just me being nosey!

April was pretty busy; I still have things in the back of my mind which I have yet to blog about, but nevertheless there were more than enough exciting things on here! The biggest of these has to be my fancy lunch at Pizza Express, plus of course my very first giveaway! Winner will be announced on Twitter soon.

As well as all the blog excitement, this month I have been enjoying:

Hope you all had similarly lovely Aprils, here’s to a fabulous May.

Express Lunch Menu at Pizza Express, Clifton Village

Ahh, what’s the weather been like? It seems almost like an age ago when, on a sunny Good Friday, I had the fortune of being invited to try the new Pizza Express Lunch Menu!

pizza express lunch menu

I always feel a bit cheeky when I am offered things to review on the blog, but I felt positively royal when me and Tom strutted on down to fancy-pants Clifton village, to dine at the fabulous Pizza Express on Regent Street. I chose this one because, despite living down the road, I had never experienced its grandure up-close. I had to check with the lovely chap who served us whether our lunch outing was actually complimentary or not, I couldn’t quite believe it. Sacre bleu, it was!

Well, regardless of whether we were dining for free or not, the new lunch menu is incredibly reasonably priced, in my humble opinion. You can pick up a dainty pizza or smaller salad for around a fiver, or do as Tom did, and plump for their new ‘Piadinas’ – a light pizza dough bun stuffed with a range of delicious fillings. I liked the sound of the Chicken Avocado, but it being a sunny day and all, I was in the mood for salad. Tom had the Caesar Piadina (*), whereas I opted for the Pollo Salad (*).

doughballs at pizza express

Of course, considering my nickname, which lent itself to the title of this blog, I can’t well go to Pizza Express and not have doughballs, can I?! As you can see, as soon as they were placed on the table, ol’ captain greedy bones was all over them; it was all I could do to get a picture before they were gone! Four little doughballs was just enough to tide us over until the main event, and at £1.75 (*), you can’t go wrong.

We were certainly not left disappointed by our luncheon choices. I was definitely not expecting breadsticks on my salad, and was also pleasantly shocked at the size of it! Not too shabby for under five quid. Tom’s Piadina impressed too; I had a little nibble of the bread (I’m not such a fan of anchovies) and found that pizza dough makes a pretty darn tasty shell for a sandwich. I will most definitely be getting one of these the next time we come.

Other than the doughballs, another one of my favourite things which Pizza Express do are the little miniature desserts you can get on the side with a coffee or a cuppa. They’re only an extra few quid, and are just perfect if you fancy something sweet after all that doughy deliciousness. I had a chocolate brownie and a posh Rosy Lee, Tom had an espresso with a little double espresso chocolate torte. I have to admit, I did like his better than mine (it was uber chocolatey and soft and creamy all at once), and managed to eat the lion’s share of both desserts. Oops.

So there you have it; if you’re in the middle of a mammoth shopping spree and are in need of sustenance, or just fancy something a bit different on a lunchtime, you need look no further than your local Pizza Express. They do all your favourites, shrunk in size and price for a light and quick lunch stop. Just writing this post has made me thing about going back!

No 31, Urban Graphic – Wishlist + GIVEAWAY

I told you exciting things were coming, and by jove is this the most exciting of the lot!

Bristolians, have you ever taken a stroll down Baldwin Street, and wondered what ever could take the place in the stunning building where once Photographique stood? WELL. That fabulous building is now inhabited by the equally marvellous Urban Graphic, whose flagship Bristol store, No. 31, is home to the most weird and wonderful array of simply beautifully designed products.

Urban Graphic greeting cards

Urban Graphic are primarily a design-led publisher of greetings cards and stationary, who, since 2003, have been found in such stores as Paperchase, Scribbler, Waterstones, Urban Outfitters and even Harrods amongst others. With their new store, however, they have curated a collection of gorgeously designed items perfect for everyday use, so you can make everyday a little more beautiful. It’s basically a website full of my favourite things.

1 // 2 // 3 // 4 // 5 // 6

I was asked by Urban Graphic to choose a selection of my absolute favourites from their website, of things which I would most probably pick up if I were to pop in the shop tomorrow.

The first is this Alice in Wonderland art print (1). I’ve been really attempting to get some more art up on the walls recently, starting with two of my favourite prints I got properly framed (you may have spied them on my Instagram). I absolutely adore the bold typography of this print, plus Alice was my favourite book when I was little, so it’s a bit of a winner all round, really!

I continue the Victoriana theme with this fabulous cushion from Chase & Wonder (2). You aren’t a true Bristolian unless you are somewhat obsessed with balloons, and it’s true that I turn into a 5-year-old whenever I see one. Perhaps if I were to buy this I could be just as excited every time I see it?

Next is this adorable Donna Wilson egg cup (3). I’m not sure what else to say about this other than cats + eggs = joy. More favourite things, COMBINED. Nuff said.

Sitting next to my lovely cat egg cup could be these two items, this goddamn gorgeous teapot from Ferm Living (4), with its minty flat top and minimalistic design, and this pretty abstract ‘Beats & Biscuits’ plate (5) from Jimbobart. Apparently, ‘after clearing the decks, Mr. Badger drops eggs, mixes phat sugar and flour and beats, heats, scratches and samples his fresh-tasting cookies.’ That’s my kind of woodland creature.

Finally, I snuck something on my list for Tom (such a good wife). He’s a bit of a dirty hipster with his massive ginger beard and bike that he built himself, which he rides to work every day. He recently ran into a spot of bother with one of the pedals, and I reckon if he had this Bicycle Bible (6) on him that it would have been fixed up in no time!

As well as asking what I would choose myself from the store, Urban Graphic kindly offered to send over a sample of some of their products so I could see what they were all about. I was absolutely gobsmacked when this massive (and beautifully wrapped) parcel was delivered to my desk at work, so much so I had to get a picture before I ripped it open!

I got some brilliant greetings cards (my favourite being the one about cats), a massive slab of gorgeous rose-flavoured chocolate, some rather fancy-looking perfume samples from Juliette Has a Gun and LaLique (my favourite being one called ‘Lady Vengeance’), plus this mug and teatowel, by a company called Lettered.

What’s more, as well as sending over a ‘Successful Women‘ teatowel for me, Urban Graphic also kindly sent one over for me to give away to one lucky reader! I’m pretty gosh darn excited about this, as it’s the first ever giveaway I have ever hosted, so forgive me if I seem a little clueless! If you spot anything wrong then let me know on the Twitter – @lilydoble.

I’ve heard that Rafflecopter make things pretty simple, and so I’ve set up one below, which should hopefully work if you click on the link. Just leave a comment below with what you would choose from Urban Graphic and I will choose a winner when it closes next Tuesday!

Good luck!

Bath in Fashion 2014

bath in fashion, city of bath

Last weekend, on the most gloriously sunny Sunday we have had this year (unlike today) I had the absolute pleasure of being invited to the rather swanky Royal Crescent Hotel, for a preview of this year’s Bath in Fashion extravaganza, which will be taking place in the city in May.

The city was looking particularly picturesque in the sunshine, and I have to admit I felt a bit celebrity-like as I strutted on past the tourists and straight into the glorious gardens of the Royal Crescent Hotel. It seemed to go on forever, and there was an amazing looking brass chair thing swinging from a tree, which I could have happily sat in and basked in the sunshine all day. Sadly though (!) it was time for our tea and biscuits, and a preview of what is to come from Bath in Fashion this year.

Bath in Fashion is a pretty serious affair. I feel rather ashamed of myself for not partaking in more events in Bath, particularly as it’s only a short distance from Bris, and I work just down the road! Considering the stellar line up of talks and events happening this year, it would be silly not to – as well as workshops, vintage fairs and film events, there are a number of talks hosted throughout the city, with big names such as Meadham Kirchhoff, BIBA creator Barbara Hulanicki, and MD of Topshop, Mary Homer. There was even mention of hundreds of crocheted roses adorning roman columns throughout the week of the festival; now that’s surely something worth seeing! I’m quite sad I was too late to get involved.

bath in fashion 2014

The next part of our action-packed day was a scavenger hunt across the city, to find this year’s trends (including pastels, florals and metallics) and to assemble outfits and upload them to using the hashtag #bathinfashion. Our team, the ‘Fashion Vultures’ included myself, Amie, Sophie, Jess and Hayley. We spent the best part of an hour and a half scouring the city’s best boutiques (and maybe a small stop at Pret a Manger) and hastily arranging and displaying outfits, and guess what? WE ONLY WON! I got to take home a lovely little green beauty box from Souk Souk (post to follow!).

bath fashion museum

After our tiring hunt it was back to the Fashion Museum, downstairs in the absolutely stunning Assembly Rooms. I snuck off to pretend I was a Georgian (ie, twirling about in an empty chandeliered room) and take some photos of the building.

It was then time for a look around the museum, which is currently hosting an exhibition dedicated to Georgian Fashion, and its influences on modern couture. The dress in the middle is Vivienne Westwood, which I couldn’t stop gawping at (I wish I got a proper picture!). The piece de resistance, however, was the stunning Christopher Kane dress, chosen as the Dress of the Year for 2013. It’s nice to see how the tastes and styles have changed over the years, as a collection of the past dresses are on display next to this one.

victorian dress up, bath fashion museum victorian dress up

The whole day was almost trumped completely, however, when I GOT TO DRESS UP AS A VICTORIAN. Words cannot express how excited I am about this (seriously, all I want to go is type sjsoijsopfnjuwemkoldfplspjiowqnklal) so caps will have to do. As previously expressed on this blog, anything Industrial Revolution-based makes me extremely happy, and only added to this giddy wonderment of dressing up was people telling me I actually suited being a Victorian – I am very close to just quitting my day job and living my whole life in a bonnet. The two lovely ladies in the top photo are Jo and BFF Ellie. I think we all look rather spiffing.

After our dress-up fun-time there was just enough time for a swift glass of champers then it was back on a train to Bristol. I had the most fantastic day, and would like to thank for organising, plus The Royal Crescent Hotel, the Fashion Museum, Bath BID and Visit Bath. I can’t wait to check out all the fab things at Bath in Fashion this year, from 3rd-10th May!

Bravas, Bristol

Our eating out spree continues!

Last week, after our very first trip to the Cube (which is shameful considering – a) it is one of the best places I have ever visited and b) we have lived in Bristol for nearly 5 years, ie in other words we should have visited sooner!) we came out after the film decidedly peckish, and in the mood to eat. The initial plan was to go to Pieminister, but after deliberating for all of five minutes we decided we weren’t in the mood for pie, and began the trek back up the hill to Cotham.

We settled on Bravas, a fancy looking tapas place on Cotham Hill I’ve always wanted to visit, but seem to pick the days when it is absolutely jam packed full of people. Well, considering it was a Tuesday, it was definitely still surprisingly busy, but the lovely waiter man found us a spot on the bar – right in front of the food!

Bravas bristol bravas bristol bravas bristol bravas bristol

It didn’t take us long to decide what to eat. We started with a beer – it’s tiring walking up Spring Hill – and some bread with aioli, which sadly disappeared before I could get a decent photo. I love aioli, imagine a really rich buttery, olive oily-tasting garlic mayo and you’re nearly there (except far fancier than garlic mayo, obviously). The bread was fab too, dense and soft with a crispy crust. Having been sat right in front of all the dishes of food in the chiller we went for three of these – garlic mushrooms with pine nuts, sweet potato with goats cheese, and river trout with lemon.

Now, this is somewhat of a revelation for me – I hate fish. I mean, really really hate it. But when I saw it glistening in it’s lemony oil in front of me it seemed very appealing, considering the famished state I was in. Maybe it’s a sign of my increasing sophistication (or perhaps more likely a sign that I am getting old – changing tastes and all that!). Trout, I have discovered, tastes (and looks) a bit like salmon, and although all I did was pick and nibble a bit at it, it was very tasty, especially when smothered in lemon and olive oil.

One thing I will say about Bravas is that everything is pretty oily. I even managed to smother oil all over my new camera somehow! I know that this bothers some people (why?!), but for me, it only added to said deliciousness. The quality of the oil must be pretty top notch, too, as it had a really lovely flavour, not like the stuff I buy down the supermarket. My favourite of the three were the mushrooms, being a bit of a garlic fiend, which were the least expensive of the three at £2.50. It’s also worth noting that everything is very reasonably priced – all the veggie dishes hover at around £2.50/£3, with fish at around £4 and creeping up to £5 for the meat dishes.

Now, although we were pretty happily full off the three dishes and the bread, I couldn’t leave without sampling their orange and almond cake. It’s probably my favourite cake ever, and this one didn’t disappoint. This healthy slab came out of the kitchen warm, although I was a bit confused (nay, outraged) that they brought two spoons! Didn’t they realise it was all for me?! I had to share it with Tom in the end, which I was pretty unhappy about.

I’m glad I can tick another one of my neighbourhood restaurants off my list, and we will definitely be visiting here again. The food was delicious, the beer was cold, the decor was beautiful but most importantly the staff were brilliant, constantly checking if we needed anything else.

I heartily recommend!

March Favourites

It’s April! Ermagerd! Wherever has the time gone?! Seems like yesterday I was writing the February Favourites, well here I am again with my favourite things from the month of March:

march favourites lily doughball

My mum and brother popped down to Bath and took me for a surprise lunchtime cuppa // I had Lucky Charms nearly every day for breakfast // I got a mini Mario in my Happy Meal // I made some awesome flower fairy lights // We went to the museum for my brothers birthday and saw all the stuffed animals // I got to try on this fabulous hat by Victoria Grant

march favourites lily doughball

I got to see my favourite Bristolian blogger faces at a cocktail night hosted by Gina // This tip jar made me chuckle // I had a mega-happiness afternoon where I bought a new (vintage) pair of shoes which make me feel like Tigerlily, I had the best soft drink ever, and I bought a new camera! Phew! // Last but not least, I keep dreaming of the awesome noodles at Baowow

100happydays

You may have noticed, if you follow me on , that I have started participating in the 100 Happy Days photo challenge. When I first spotted the hashtag on Instagram and looked it up I thought it sounded pretty stupid – surely, I thought, this is just an excuse for people to share yet MORE photos of their kids/pets/food that no one wants to see? But then I gave it a go, and hey, I might post copious amounts of photos of my dinner or other such like which may be of little interest to anyone else, but I’m finding it really rewarding to remember the little things which made me happy every day. I may have missed a couple of days here and there, but for the most part, I’m doing pretty well! You can search for my photos using the #doughballs100happydays hashtag.

Let’s hope I keep it up throughout April! It’s going to be a busy one, we’re having a little holiday just after Easter! I can’t wait.
