Colonel Mustard / Crochet Envy

We’re finally starting to settle in to our new little house now; we’ve met the neighbours, gone for a stroll round the new area, had Tom’s parents down for tea, and now have the internet installed – YAY!

Another plus to add to the seemingly endless long list of awesome things about our new house is that we have a garden, which means… I have a little secret place to take outfit photos! I’ve wanted to do outfit posts for absolutely ages – I’m mega envious of what other lovely blogging people like Lyzi and SJ and She and Hem are up to, but am still finding my feet a bit. Bear with me.

Also, please excuse my washing line.

[serious blogging face!]

As we all know, the weather is beginning to take a turn of late. All that Twitter seems to be full of is people gearing up for autumn, planning a little weekend getaway in a forest somewhere, and shopping for their A/W fashion staples. August isn’t over yet and we’re already waving goodbye to summer!

This makes me happy. I absolutely adore autumn, October is my favourite month and I cannot wait til it’s cold enough to start putting on my winter coat and mustard hat and go down to the park and just have a kick around in some leaves.

The other day was a bit nippy out, so I tested out my autumn/winter mustard ensemble, comprising of last year’s coat from Urban Outfitters, Primark dress, mustard jumper from H&M and a cheery mustard hat from Zara. To top the whole lot off I pinned this awesome crocheted poppy kindly sent to me by the Museum Selection (*).

This crocheted beauty will make a nice change to the November paper poppies which always melt in the rain, and seeing as it’s the 100th anniversary since the start of WWI this year, it would be shameful to not wear a poppy, and I’m pretty sure I’ll have a hard time forgetting to wear this bad boy.

Plus, I have serious crochet envy right now – the whole thing is made from  teeny tiny crochet, which is far more than my measly skills could muster. It has given me some much needed inspiration, and since receiving my poppy parcel I’ve been Googling amigurumi and becoming slightly obsessed!

To combat all the miserable serious blogging face, here is an extra special photo of me when I couldn’t get the remote back in my pocket quickly enough:

Hopefully this is one of many upcoming outfit posts, if you’ve got any tips I’d love to hear them!

Balloon Fiesta 2014 – Morning Ascent

This post has been a long time coming, but better late than never eh?!

Living in Bristol, one thing you will never, ever tire of seeing, despite the frequency at which you spot them floating over the city, is hot air balloons. Having lived here for nearly 5 years, I still do an excited squeak of ‘BLOON!’ and frantically run outside/pull over my car/jump up and down to scramble to take a photo and upload it to Instagram (to add to the relentless feed of balloon photos posted by fellow Bristolians).

Bristol International Balloon Fiesta 2014 | Lily Doughball UK Lifestyle Blog

During the first half of August, balloon sightings become far more frequent, for one reason only – the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta. Situated every year on beautiful Ashton Court Estate, this fiesta, the largest of its kind in Europe, and now in its 36th year, is frequented by non-Bristolians and Bristolians alike. We popped along for the nightglow last year, but have always wanted to attend the 6am ascent the balloons take over the city. So, setting our alarms for 4:30am on a Saturday (!), we popped along to see what it was all about.

Ashton Court looked absolutely stunning in the morning light. That top photo really doesn’t do it justice; the mist was sitting over the hills and the sun was just rising enough to cast a spooky light over the whole scene, it was amazing. If you haven’t been up to Ashton Court it is well worth a visit – pack a picnic and take a bike ride up there, you won’t be disappointed.

Arriving to the fiesta at 5:45am was really weird, the rollercoasters and amusements lay abandoned and the aftermath of the night before littered the ground, it was like something from a horror film. We could hear a bustling crowd up ahead, though, and so not wanting to miss anything, pressed on into the main arena area.

I was amazed at how busy it was. I honestly can’t believe how many people would be so dedicated to seeing balloons that they would sacrifice their time to have an early night on a Friday and get up at the crack of dawn on a weekend. It wasn’t just hardcore balloon spotters either – there were whole families, even some who had packed a morning breakfast BBQ, blokes with their dogs, photographers, and even bleary eyed people like me and Tom, clutching at a Thermos full of coffee. It made the whole atmosphere really special – we were all there to share and marvel in the spectacle of some sacks full of hot air ascending into the early morning sky.

Once the balloons started to go up, I was in full five-year-old-child mode, and had almost completely forgotten that I was awake at 6am on a Saturday. There were easily as many as the nightglow, and to be honest I much preferred the atmosphere already – it was all the excitement of seeing the balloons, but minus all the noise and local radio DJs commentating, and most of the busy crowds. Don’t get me wrong, the nightglow is great – but it’s more for those looking for glamour and spectacle. This was just some people eating bacon sarnies in a field and listening to a man on a bad PA system tell us what type of balloons they all were. I must be turning into an old lady.

The wind was in our favour, and was drifting the balloons right over our heads and over towards the city. I can’t tell you how cool it was. This last chap wasn’t sitting in a basket, but was suspended in a chair-hammock-harness type thing, which made Tom feel a little giddy (afraid of heights), but made me extremely jealous – I still haven’t completed my life goal of going up in a balloon, but I guess there’s always next year’s fiesta!

On the way out, I took this shot of all the little black specks over Bristol, and it reminded me of why I love living in this city so much.

Until next year!

Recently

It’s been a bit quiet round here as of late, and for good reason! Me and Tom packed up our bags and moved south of the river, to beautiful Windmill Hill.

IMG_1039.JPG

We don’t get the internet for another week or so, so blogging is going to be a bit hit and miss for the time being! I thought I would just give you lovely folks a snoop into what I’ve been up to this past week…

Exploring our new stomping ground. Windmill Hill is between Bedminster and Totterdown, on the south side (arguably the best side) of the river. Everyone is mega friendly round here, plus we live right next to a massive park!

Unpacking seemingly endless piles of boxes. I have way too many clothes! I think another Frock Swap might be in order.

IMG_1056.JPG

Growing veggies! We’ve inherited a pretty decent little vegetable patch, so I’ve turned my hand to a spot of gardening. I’m hoping to get some winter veg in soon. It’s a pity the neighbourhood cats like to leave little ‘surprises’ in my flower beds though… Ewww.

Reading this article about the first thing different bloggers saved up for, including yours truly! It’s a pretty fascinating read, who knew Tamagotchis were so popular?

IMG_1034.JPG

Eating mountains of leftover goods from our brand spanking new slow cooker, easily the best thing we’ve ever bought! This was beef and mushrooms slow cooked in red wine, with tagliatelle. What is it about cooking something for 8 hours that makes it so darn delicious?

Normal service will resume shortly, but for now, enjoy the rest of the week!

A Lock-In at Lush Cribbs

The Friday before last, I took a rather massive detour from my place of work in Bath, got lost in some windy country roads snaking through little villages, and somehow managed to end up at my destination – Lush at Cribbs Causeway! I love how Cribbs always seems equidistant from everywhere, a mecca of pure indulgence and blissful consumerism. Me and Tom used to pop to Cribbs just to have a wonder around (and inevitably come out with much lighter wallets!).

I had been invited along to a very special event that Lush were hosting, to showcase their new suncare range. It was a very lovely end to a rather crappy Friday; I very nearly didn’t go, but I am so glad I did.

After treating myself to dinner at Wagamama (yes, I am one of those weird people who has no problem with sitting by themselves in a restaurant… you can stare all you wish!) I hotfooted it over to the teeny little Lush store, and immediately bumped into fellow Bristolian blogging lovelies She and Hem.

We were ushered inside, and I was completely overwhelmed at how friendly and welcoming the staff were. I’ve always considered a career at Lush – every time I’ve been into one of their shops the staff seem genuinely pleased to be there, and are always cheerful and helpful. There was a member of staff positioned at various ‘stations’ around the event, talking us through some of the products.

After chatting to a lovely lady about haircare, I wandered over to where some fellow bloggers were getting stuck in making fresh face masks! This particular mixture was destined to be a pot of Catastrophe Cosmetic, packed with powerful antioxidant blueberries and calming to the skin. If you follow me on you will know that I could hardly wait to plaster it all over my mush when I got home, and it really did do my skin wonders.

Of course, the next half hour or so was spent wondering around pressing various brightly coloured things to my nose, and smelling absolutely EVERYTHING. I can get completely and utterly lost in Lush, and love how there are always new things to smell every time I go in there. I also spent a good deal of my time completely boring the pants off the poor chap who stopped to listen to me, detailing every single product I’ve bought, the things I’m sad they don’t sell any more (including Alkmaar, Tramp, and that weird banana soap they made in drainpipes), and how they should bring back Rose Jam.

Of course, the star of the show was their new suncare range – I was lucky enough to be a guinea pig for a sample of the African Paradise treatment, and can confirm that it both smells absolutely gorgeous, and left my skin beautifully smooth and moisturised. It has fresh mango to brighten the skin, as well as one of my favourite scents, moringa. We were also treated to a sample of Million Dollar Moisturiser (which left my hand baby-smooth), and the lovely Lush lady explained to me the benefits of their SLush fund, and how it is contributing directly to their products. As if we needed an excuse to love Lush any more?!

We were very lucky to receive a goody bag on the way out – as well as the samples of Sunblock, Yuzu & Cocoa, Happy Hippy and Shine So Bright, I also treated myself to a larger than usual bottle of my favourite conditioner, American Cream, and some Daddy-O shampoo to re-blondify my brassy locks.

I haven’t had a chance to test the Yuzu & Cocoa bubble bar, or the Sunblock, but I am intrigued to see if it really does have the SPF protection, if the sun ever makes a reappearance! The Happy Hippy shower gel is sure to be a favourite with everyone – I can’t see how anyone couldn’t love its cheery grapfruity smell. It also benefits from frankincense, which compliments it beautifully, and is gentle enough for all skin types, leaving mine lovely and soft.

My favourite product from this entire haul, however, is the Shine So Bright. This little tin is a balm for hair, something I had trouble grasping at first. The solid balm melts instantly onto your fingertips for easy application through the ends of your hair, leaving it feeling nourished and smelling absolutely amazing. I really can’t rate this highly enough – it tames my flyaway, over bleached locks without making my hair greasy, and the citrussy floral smell has a slightly spicy woody note to it, and lingers on my hair all day. Beautiful.

What’s your favourite Lush product?

Thank you so much again to everyone at Lush Cribbs Causeway for inviting me, for all the lovely treats, and for putting up with my crazy fangirl ramblings!

High Time for Pie Time

What with the Great British Bake Off finally gracing our screens with another hotly anticipated series this evening (SO EXCITED), it’s time to marvel at pink piped icing wonders, gasp at stolen custard, and dust off our muffin trays to begin our obsession with baked goods all over again. My favourite round in GBBO is most definitely the pie round, but I’ve never had much luck in making my own pastry. So why bother making pies, when perfectly serviceable pies are only a bike ride away?

Pieminister #EatChilled Summer Tour 2014 | Lily Doughball UK Lifestyle Blog

T’other day, aka the Monday before last, the lovely chaps from local legendary pie-makers Pieminister were in the Bath area, and graced us with their presence – and their lovely pie bike – to bestow upon us the gift of free pies!

It’s all part of their #EatChilled Summer Tour, whereby they hit the road with their snazzy bike and pedal up and down the country, handing out free samples of their new lighter pies, which are perfect with a salad for a summery evening treat.

(if you’re wondering why their awesome bike is nestled amongst some boxes rather unglamorously, it’s because they got it into the building but it wouldn’t fit through the door to our kitchen, sadly!)

Everyone at our place was over the moon at the prospect of free pies, naturally. If you’re sitting at home and harrumph-ing at the unfairness of not having a free pie van visit your place of work, then fear not! If you fancy a slice of the action (ha) simply pop over to the Pieminister website and fill out this form, and you too could soon be snacking on pies for luncheon.

There were three flavours to choose from – ‘Light as a Feta’, which is butternut, feta and sundried tomato; ‘Chickalito’, which is free range chicken and dry cured ham; or my pie of choice, ‘Kooky Chook’ – chicken, sweet potato, coconut and chilli. All the pies in the lighter range have a crumbed top rather than the traditional pastry, which helps to keep the calories down too – all pies are under 440 cals! Amazing. I can also confirm that they are pretty tasty!

Pieminister are also running a competition to ‘win a bright sunshiny day‘, including some Bristol Beer Factory beers, some of their topless pies, and a rather fabulous Field Candy lobster shade. If that’s not an incentive to hop over to their website and check out their wares, then I don’t know what is.

All that remains for me to say is thanks for the pies, guys!

The Somerset Toiletry Company

… or fancy beauty treats that won’t break the bank!

A couple of weeks ago, I found an email in my inbox from a lovely lady who works for the Somerset Toiletry Company. She asked if, to celebrate the launch of their brand new site, I would like to try some of their products, to which I (of course) jumped at the opportunity!

The Somerset Toiletry Company began life in 1999, producing beauty products for larger companies such as Zara, Anthropologie, Laura Ashley and John Lewis. Now they are venturing on alone and have created their own label, with the ethos of developing products which are beautifully designed and reasonably priced, packing the best ingredients into each range.

As well as their shiny new website they also have an outlet store in Clutton, conveniently placed between Bath and Bristol. There are absolute bargains galore to be had; I know where I’m making a beeline to do my Christmas shopping!

Somerset Toiletry Company | Lily Doughball UK Lifestyle Blog

I was very kindly sent a Ministry of Sound perfume (RRP £20, outlet £1.50 – WHAT?!), a Laura Ashley Garden Replenishing Lip Balm (RRP £7, outlet £2.50), Naturally European Luxury Hand Cream (RRP £7, outlet £4.50) and a bar of Asquith and Somerset English Rose Soap (RRP £4.50, outlet £1.50).

Somerset Toiletry Company | Lily Doughball UK Lifestyle Blog

Let’s start with the absolute bargain of the century, this Ministry of Sound perfume (*), which is only £1.50 in their outlet store! Crazy. I loved the spherical bottle, but I have to admit wasn’t mad about the smell – it’s certainly floral, but a little too sweet for my liking, but certainly fresh, and perfect for summer.

Somerset Toiletry Company | Lily Doughball UK Lifestyle Blog

I did a little squeal of joy when I saw that there was a lip balm poking out of the box. A gal can never have too many lip products in her life. This Laura Ashley Replenishing lip balm (*) certainly does not disappoint. It’s a very melt-y, buttery texture, which sinks into your lips fairly quickly, leaving them feeling very nourished. Plus, it has a very pleasant minty smell and taste, which is just perfect for someone who drinks as much coffee as I do (sometimes breath mints don’t cut the mustard).

Somerset Toiletry Company | Lily Doughball UK Lifestyle Blog

This hand cream I was also a massive fan of. Naturally European are one of five ranges under the Somerset Toiletry name, with the aim being to have something to suit everyone’s budget. I suffer from chronically dry chapped hands, even in summer, so this was an absolute blessing. It is quite rich, being 20% shea butter, but incredibly luxurious, and the smell is absolutely wonderful.

Somerset Toiletry Company | Lily Doughball UK Lifestyle Blog

I am an absolute sucker for anything which smells, tastes, looks like or even vaguely mentions or resembles roses. I adore roses. Therefore, this soap was right up my alley. The trouble is, I rarely use soap at all, and being the thrifty and resourceful housewife that I am, I’m afraid this chap is going to have to wait until we have used up our current stash of bathroom products. The smell is something I can assure you of, at least – it is beautiful, and at £1.50, you can’t really go wrong.

You don’t have to wait til Christmas to pay them a visit (I certainly won’t be) – you can find them over at their website, or if you’re local you can pop down to their Clutton store – Somerset Toiletry Company, Clutton Hill Farm Estate, King Lane, BS39 5QQ.
